1618: Johannes Kepler discovers the third law of planetary motion, which states that planets with larger orbits will move slower and take longer to go around the sun.
1702: Anne Stuart, sister of Mary II, becomes Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland (Wales too!) after the death of Mary's husband William III.1775: Thomas Paine's pamphlet "African Slavery in America" is published. It is the first article in the United States calling for the abolition of slavery.
1783: 90 Native Americans in Gnadenhutten, OH, who had converted to Christianity had their skulls crushed with mallets by Pennsylvania militiamen in retaliation for raids carried out by other Indians.
1817: The New York Stock Exchange is founded.
1841: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Supreme Court Justice, is born. He said, "The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins."1892: Mississippi John Hurt is born.1894: The state of New York enacts the nation's first dog-licensing law.
1917: The US Senate votes to limit filibusters by adopting the cloture rule. It allows for the end of a filibuster if 60 Senators vote to end debate.
1921: Cyd Charisse is born.1921: Alan Hale, Jr. is born. He is most well-known for playing Captain Jonas Grumby on Gilligan's Island. How pathetic is it that I know The Skipper's real name?1940: Susan Clark is born. She played the mom on Webster.
1945: Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees is born.
1948: Peggy March is born. She had a number one hit in 1963 with the lonely desperate girl ballad I Will Follow Him.

1950: Marshal Voroshilov announces that the Soviet Union has the atomic bomb.
1965: The first American combat troops arrive in Vietnam.
1969: Andrea Parker is born. She played the deliciously evil Miss Parker on The Pretender. 1983: President Reagan calls the Soviet Union an evil empire.
