1620: In what is now Provincetown Harbor near Cape Cod, the Mayflower Compact is signed on the Mayflower, establishing the basic laws for the Plymouth Colony.
1675: Gottfried Leibniz demonstrates integral calculus for the first time to find the area under the graph of y = f(x) function. I have no idea what that means, but it sure sounds impressive.
1839: The Virginia Military Institute is founded in Lexington, Virginia.1864: During the Civil War, Sherman's March to the Sea begins when Union General William Tecumseh Sherman burns Atlanta to the ground in preparation for his march south.
1889: Washington is admitted as the 42nd US state.1918: World War I ends as Germany signs an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside of Compiègne in France. The war officially stops at 11:00 (The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). During WWII, Germany would make France surrender in the same railroad car at the same location.
1885: General George S. Patton, Jr. is born.
1921: The Tomb of the Unknowns is dedicated by US President Warren G. Harding at Arlington National Cemetery.
1922: Kurt Vonnegut is born.
1925: Jonathan Winters is born.1926: U.S. Route 66 is established.
1930: Patent number 1781541 is awarded to Albert Einstein and Leó Szilárd for their invention, the Einstein refrigerator.
1940: At the Battle of Taranto, the Royal Navy launches the first aircraft carrier strike in history, on the Italian fleet.
1962: Demi Moore is born. She was in the MST3K episode Master Ninja I and a couple of other things.
1966: Alison Doody is born. She played the wicked Nazi archaeologist in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
