There's racism, imperialism, sexual deviancy and Objectivism in today's edition!1413: Henry V is crowned King of England.
1835: King Leopold II of Belgium is born. He owned the largest single plot of land in history - the Congo Free State and treated the natives with a barbarity that was shocking, even for the time.1865: Robert E. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, effectively ending the war.1867: The US Senate ratifies a treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska.
1898: Curly Lambeau, first coach of the Green Bay Packers is born.1903: Ward Bond is born. He was in a ton of movies, but I remember him best as Bert the Cop in It's a Wonderful Life.1909: The Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act of 1909 passes. It was the first lowering of tariff rates since the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act of 1894 and caused Progressives to become greatly annoyed with President William Howard Taft.
1910: Abe Ribicoff is born. He was the first Jewish governor of Connecticut, but was pretty much everywhere in politics during the 50's and 60's. Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley is alleged to have shouted, "Fuck you, you Jew motherfucker," at him during the '68 Democratic Convention. Real smooth, Mayor.1926: Hugh Hefner is born.1928: Tom Lehrer is born.

1930: Nathaniel Branden is born. He, along with Alan Greenspan, was in Ayn Rand's stable of boy toys back in the '50s. Man, there was some freaky stuff going on in that whole crowd.1932: Jim Fowler is born. He was the co-host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. He usually took the dangerous jobs while Marlin Perkins had a Scotch back in the tent.

1932: Carl Perkins is born. He wrote "Blue Suede Shoes."

1932: Cheetah the ape born. He was in many of the old Tarzan movies and is rumored to have had a sexual obsession with Johnny Weismuller and had to be forcibly restrained every time they shared a scene together. In deference to Mr . Weismuller, it should be noted that the obsession was not reciprocated.1937: The Kamikaze arrives in Croydon Airport in London. It is the first Japanese-built aircraft for fly to Europe.
1937: Marty Kroft is born. He, along with his brother Sid, created such bizarre children's programs as Lidsville, H.R. Pufnstuff, and Land of the Lost.

1939: Marian Anderson sings at the Lincoln Memorial, after being denied the right to sing at the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitutional Hall.

1942: US forces surrender on the Bataan Peninsula (in the Phillipines) and the Bataan Death March gets under way.
1945: The US Atomic Energy Commission is formed.
1953: Warner Brothers premieres the first 3-D movie, House of Wax.
1954: Dennis Quaid is born.1959: NASA announces the selection of the United States' first seven astronauts who become known as the Mercury Seven.1965: Paulina Porizkova is born.1969: The Chicago Eight plead not guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
